Koepelgevangenis Breda, Circular prison complex in Breda, Netherlands.
Koepelgevangenis is a prison complex in Breda featuring a large central dome with radiating cell blocks arranged according to panopticon principles. The facility comprises multiple interconnected buildings designed to maximize supervision and control throughout the site.
The complex was built between 1882 and 1886 by architect Johan Metzelaar and operated continuously until 2016. It held many World War II collaborators during the occupation period.
The complex showcases Dutch institutional architecture through its church, fortified gates, and former court building. Visitors today can explore how these different buildings worked together to form a complete system.
The facility is now open to visitors for various events and activities throughout the year. Plan adequate time to explore the different areas and buildings within the complex.
The site now hosts interactive prison escape experiences where visitors navigate challenges alongside approximately 80 actors. This creative reuse transforms the former detention spaces into immersive entertainment venues.
