Castle Cartils

Castle Cartils stands near the meeting point of three river valleys and features a rectangular form with a round tower from 1500. The complex also includes a gate tower marked by pilaster division and a dome roof.

The first written record of this structure dates to 1257, when it was known under the name Curthils. The lords of Cartils lived there continuously until 1792.

The castle holds the status of a Rijksmonument, showing its importance through the use of marlstone and preserved building elements from different periods. Visitors can notice the medieval building style in the stone structures and overall layout of the complex.

The estate is located in Gulpen-Wittem municipality at Kapolder 10. Since it is private property, visitors should check ahead and arrange permission before attempting to visit.

The round tower was added in 1500 and remains the oldest surviving structure of the entire complex. This distinctive feature sets it apart from other fortifications in the region.
