Grote Kerk

Grote Kerk is a Protestant church in Harlingen built with a distinctive medieval tuff tower and a Greek cross floor plan. Inside, you find three stone door frames and several burial monuments from its predecessor, creating a layered interior.

This church was built in 1775 on the site of an older church called Michaëlskerk. The medieval tower from that earlier building was kept and remains a key feature of the structure today.

The church houses an organ built in the 1770s that is still played during special events and performances. You can experience the craftsmanship of the instrument and how it fills the space with sound.

The best time to visit is on Saturday afternoons during summer months when the church opens as part of a local walking route program. You can find it on Kerkpad street, in the center of town.

The church roof was designed with a rainwater collection system that gathered water into large basins. This system once provided fresh water to local residents, showing how buildings were designed for practical community needs.
