Napels, Rural hamlet in Oldambt, Netherlands
Napels is a small rural settlement in Oldambt that stretches along both sides of the railway line connecting Groningen to Nieuweschans, dividing the western and eastern sections between Westerlee and Heiligerlee. The settlement consists of detached houses scattered across the landscape.
The settlement was founded in the early 19th century as a refuge community with eight modest huts housing around 70 day laborers by 1846. It grew from these humble beginnings into a stable residential community.
The people here live in simple homes that have kept their working-class character for generations. This everyday residential life shapes how the settlement looks and feels today.
The settlement is best explored on foot or by bicycle since most houses are scattered along the railway line. The flat terrain offers easy navigation and open views of the surroundings.
At the border with Winschoten stands Tower 7T1, a Cold War observation post built in 1954 to watch for low-flying aircraft. This relic of border surveillance is an unusual reminder of the region's divided past.
