Kasteel Hilligersberg, Medieval castle ruins in Hillegersberg, Netherlands
Kasteel Hilligersberg is a castle ruin with a stone residential tower located on the grounds of Hillegondakerk cemetery in Rotterdam. The tower measures about 10 by 10 meters and sits on an artificially built mound that originally elevated the defensive structure.
The fortress was built in the 13th century as a defensive installation in northern Rotterdam. It was destroyed in 1426 when Jacoba van Beieren conquered the region.
The ruins sit on cemetery grounds where visitors can observe how the site has transformed across centuries from a military stronghold into a spiritual space. The location shows how communities adapted medieval structures into their religious practices rather than abandoning them entirely.
You can visit the ruins through the cemetery entrance at Kerkstraat 43, but you should be respectful during any funeral services taking place. Plan your visit when ceremonies are not scheduled to experience the site properly.
The remains were preserved beneath cemetery soil, which protected their structure across centuries. This burial beneath the ground helped maintain them as one of the best-preserved defensive structures in the region.
