D45, Ancient megalithic burial site in Emmen, Netherlands
D45 is a megalithic structure in the Emmerdennen woodland, made of enormous stone slabs arranged in a chamber-like formation. The structure stretches about 18 meters and forms a characteristic burial chamber from the Stone Age.
The monument dates from the Stone Age and was built by people who had recently turned to farming. It received official protection status as a Rijksmonument in 1983 and has been safeguarded ever since.
This monument represents burial practices of early farming societies in Northern Europe and shows how important such places were for the community. People came here to bury their dead and perform rituals that were central to life together.
The site sits in a wooded area and is easy to reach on foot by following walking paths through the nature area. The best time to visit is during daylight hours when you can see the structure and surroundings properly.
Excavations have uncovered many items from the daily life of the people who lived and worshipped here. These finds show that this place was important not just for burials but also for the social life of early farmers.
