Staelduinse Bos, Nature area in Hoek van Holland, Netherlands.
Staelduinse Bos is a forest area of about 95 hectares in Hoek van Holland built on ancient river dunes. A network of narrow paths winds through woodlands and meadows, creating a varied walking environment.
The forest began to develop around 1850 on river dunes that formed along the Maas river. During World War II, concrete bunkers were built throughout the area as military structures.
The visitor center d'Oude Koestal shares information about local wildlife and the natural environment of this region on weekends. People come here to learn how the forest fits into the broader ecosystem and what animals call it home.
Three marked trails offer different lengths and difficulty levels, including options for birdwatchers, a historic site, and wheelchair access. Wear sturdy footwear and expect muddy sections after rain.
The old concrete bunkers from the war now serve as caves for bats and must be protected accordingly. Access to these areas is limited to avoid disturbing the protected species that live there.
