Groot Horloo, Modern residential castle in Ermelo, Netherlands
Groot Horloo is a modern residential complex in Ermelo featuring a central tower and multiple buildings arranged around two courtyards. The design follows Delft School principles and houses around 100 residential units alongside shared community spaces.
The complex was built in 2010 near the A28 highway on land that was once part of the Zuiderzee shoreline in the Veluwe region. Its location marks a transition from rural landscape to contemporary residential development.
The name refers to the historic castle estate that once occupied this location. Residents today share a contemporary complex that reinterprets how a traditional Dutch castle might function as a living community.
The robust walls serve as noise barriers protecting against the nearby highway while maintaining architectural character. The complex is an active residential community, so access to grounds and interior areas may be limited to residents and scheduled tours.
The grounds contain several badger sett systems that integrate natural habitats alongside the residential development. This uncommon approach demonstrates how modern architecture can coexist with wildlife populations.
