Prins Hendrikplantsoen, Public park in central Amsterdam, Netherlands
Prins Hendrikplantsoen is a public square in central Amsterdam located directly across from Central Station. The space combines a historical green area with modern urban functions and sits just steps away from the main transport hub.
The square was created in 1883 during the construction of Central Station and was originally planted with large trees such as lindens, maples, and elms. The site was converted into a bus station in the 1960s and served as a major transport hub for decades.
The square is named after Prince Henry of the Netherlands and once served as a place of public commemoration with monuments. The space reflects the connection between historical memory and contemporary urban life.
The square is easily reached on foot from the city center and train station and functions as an important transit area. During bad weather, the surrounding buildings and shopping areas offer shelter and alternative activities nearby.
Beneath the square lies one of the largest bicycle storage facilities in the Netherlands, accommodating thousands of bikes. This underground installation was built between 2018 and 2023 and transformed the location into a modern transport hub while preserving the surface.
