Goudenstein Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Haaften, Netherlands.
Goudenstein Castle is a medieval ruin in Haaften with a preserved round tower as its main feature. The tower shapes the townscape and can be viewed from several streets and from the banks of the Waal river.
The castle was built in the 14th century by the Van Haeften family and served as a defensive structure in the region. It was destroyed in 1672 during the invasion by King Louis XIV and remained in ruins afterward.
The castle tower is part of the local townscape and helps shape the identity of Haaften alongside other historic structures. Residents and visitors recognize the round tower as a landmark that embodies the medieval past of the area.
The ruin is visible from Dreef and Koningsstraat, but stands on private property in residential backyards. The best view of the structure can be had from public paths without entering private land.
The round tower was originally part of a larger fortified complex, but only this tower survived the destruction of 1672. Today it stands as a rare example of such a fully preserved corner tower structure from that period.
