Kohnstammhuis, Monumental office building in Amsterdam-Oost, Netherlands.
The Kohnstammhuis is a ten-story office building located on Wibautstraat, standing 48 meters tall with a symmetrical layout. Four corner pavilions define the structure, and its rectangular footprint distinguishes it within the surrounding neighborhood.
This structure was completed in 1958 by architect Gijsbert Friedhoff on the site of the former Weesperpoortstation. It initially served as the Central Tax Office from construction until 1994, when its purpose changed to educational use.
The interior features non-figurative wall paintings and colored glass work that visitors encounter while moving through the building. The facade combines red brick with horizontal concrete bands, creating a distinctive visual impression from street level.
Today the building houses departments of Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences with facilities for students and events. Access points are marked by decorative shields on the facade that reflect the character of the site.
The entrance displays decorative shields representing both Amsterdam and the Netherlands, making a visual connection to local identity. These shields lead visitors up a grand stairway to the corner entrances, emphasizing the building's architectural design.
