Laurium

Laurium is a Roman frontier fort in the present-day Netherlands positioned strategically along the Rhine. The site shows foundations of residential buildings, earthen ramparts, and ditches that formed part of the river defense system.

The fort was established during the early Roman occupation period and served as a border post for several decades. It formed part of a larger defensive network that protected Rome against Germanic tribes.

The remains at Laurium reveal how Roman soldiers lived and worked at this riverside location, with visible traces of barracks areas and fortifications. These findings help visitors understand what daily life looked like in a frontier fort.

The site is best explored on foot, with partially excavated structures still visible in the ground. Information boards on location help visitors understand the layout and purpose of different areas.

The settlement was specially adapted to handle flooding, with raised foundations and drainage systems for the marshy landscape. Such engineering solutions show how Romans tailored their construction techniques to challenging local conditions.
