Hompesche molen, Historic grain mill in Stevensweert, Netherlands
Hompesche Molen is a polder mill in Stevensweert standing about 37 meters tall across six levels. The structure features multiple working floors designed for grain milling using wind power.
Construction took place from 1721 to 1722 after Count Reinaert Vincent van Hompesch acquired the lordships of Stevensweert. The mill was built as part of his development efforts for the region.
The mill has long served as a place where people came to have their grain processed and to meet. Today visitors can observe how traditional milling techniques worked and understand the important role such mills played in everyday life.
Plan your visit for a Sunday when the mill is open to the public and you can explore its interior spaces. On certain Saturday afternoons, demonstrations show how the milling process works.
Inside the building there is a small cell that was once used as a prison and can be viewed by visitors today. This unusual space reminds us that the mill also served administrative functions for the estate.
