Berkenhof 's Tropical Zoo & Vlindertuin, Indoor tropical zoo and butterfly garden in Borsele, Netherlands
Berkenhof's Tropical Zoo & Vlindertuin is an indoor zoo and butterfly garden located in Borsele, in the Dutch province of Zeeland. The building houses tropical animals such as green iguanas, dwarf caimans, tarantulas, poison dart frogs, and primates, alongside a separate butterfly garden where live butterflies fly freely among plants.
The zoo opened in 2001 in a converted building in Borsele, starting as a modest collection of tropical animals. Over the following years it expanded its range of animals and added attractions like the butterfly garden and the dinosaur exhibition.
The name Berkenhof refers to the birch groves that once shaped this part of Zeeland, giving a local identity to a place filled with tropical animals. Visitors can watch group animals like primates and dwarf caimans interact naturally within their enclosures, which makes the experience feel less like a classic zoo.
Because the spaces are all indoors and heated, the zoo works well as a destination on rainy or cold days. A restaurant on the grounds lets visitors take a break between sections without leaving the building.
A section called Fossil Mine lets visitors dig in sand to uncover replica fossils, which is an unusual hands-on activity for a zoo. Just next to it, the Dino Expo displays life-sized models of dinosaurs including Stegosaurus and Tyrannosaurus Rex.
