Berkenhof 's Tropical Zoo & Vlindertuin, Indoor tropical zoo and butterfly garden in Borsele, Netherlands
Berkenhof 's Tropical Zoo is an indoor facility housing living animals from tropical regions in climate-controlled spaces year-round. The different sections display green iguanas, dwarf caimans, tarantulas, colored frogs, and primates in enclosures designed to reflect their natural habitats.
The facility opened in 2001, converting an existing building into a home for tropical animals. Since its opening, it has grown into a recognized family destination in the Zeeland region.
The name reflects the birch groves that once characterized this region, and visitors observe animals in settings that mirror their natural behaviors and social structures. The way people move through different zones shows how tropical ecosystems function as interconnected communities.
The facility is open year-round since indoor spaces remain consistently heated. The grounds are easy to walk through at your own pace, and there is a restaurant area for breaks between viewing the animals.
A section called Fossil Mine allows visitors to dig and discover replica fossils embedded in sand. Nearby, the Dino Expo displays life-sized models of famous dinosaurs like the Stegosaurus and Tyrannosaurus Rex.
