Slot Zuylen, Medieval castle in Oud-Zuilen, Netherlands
Slot Zuylen is a medieval stone castle on the bank of the Vecht river in Oud-Zuilen, in the Dutch municipality of Stichtse Vecht. The main building, which features a tower, is surrounded by a gatehouse, a coach house, garden paths, and a park that reaches down to the water.
The castle dates back to the 13th century and was rebuilt in 1510 following destruction. In the 18th century it was thoroughly renovated to become a country residence, which is largely the form it still takes today.
Slot Zuylen is closely tied to the Van Tuyll van Serooskerken family, who lived there across many generations and shaped every corner of the interior. The rooms still contain their furniture, paintings, and personal objects, giving visitors a direct sense of how that family spent their days.
The interior of the castle can only be visited on a guided tour, while the garden and grounds are open to walk through on your own. Daytime visits work best, as the paths along the river and through the park are where most of the experience happens.
The park contains an 18th-century curved wall known as a serpentine wall, built to grow southern fruits in the cool Dutch climate. Its curves trap heat from the sun, which once allowed figs, peaches, and other fruits from warmer regions to ripen here.
