Harlingen beach, Sandy beach in Harlingen, Netherlands
Harlingen beach is a sandy shore along the Wadden Sea with brown-colored sand and a width of about 50 meters from the water barrier to the waterline. The coastline extends for several hundred meters and connects directly to the Westerzeedijk area.
The beach was created in 1997 after a canal was deepened for salt industry operations, transforming the area into a recreational space. This development provided a new public access point to the water.
The beach is part of the Westerzeedijk area, where visitors can experience the local maritime heritage through historic buildings and monuments around the waterfront. The setting shows how the town has long been connected to the sea.
Free parking is available near the Westerzeedijk area with over 100 spaces within short walking distance of the entrance. Visitors should be aware of tidal changes since the beach experiences natural water level variations typical of the Wadden Sea.
A 200-meter floating pier extends into the Wadden Sea, allowing visitors to walk above the water and jump into the sea from its end. This pier is popular with swimmers and divers, especially on warm days.
