Castle of Gronsveld, Medieval castle in Eijsden-Margraten, Netherlands
Castle of Gronsveld is a medieval fortress in Eijsden-Margraten with multiple buildings assembled over time. The complex includes a main residence, orangery, gate structure, outbuildings, a tower, and garden walls that define the entire grounds.
The castle was built in the 13th century but suffered major damage during the 16th century. It was rebuilt in 1594 and underwent significant renovation work during the 1880s.
The castle served as a residence for the House of Bronckhorst family for centuries and remains a landmark in local memory. Walking through the grounds shows how nobility shaped life in this corner of the region.
The grounds are located at Rijksweg 68 in Eijsden and are easily accessible. Visitors can explore walking paths and gardens around the structures at their own pace.
In 1634 the fortress was seized by adventurer Theodoor Cauwenberg and his followers who transformed it into a stronghold. Only military forces from Liège and Aachen were able to restore control.
