Hoogvliet, Urban district in Rotterdam, Netherlands
Hoogvliet is an urban district of Rotterdam comprising eight distinct neighborhoods connected by green spaces and modern infrastructure. The residential areas spread across a large expanse and offer a mix of housing blocks and open spaces.
The place was first mentioned in 1326 as Oedenvliet and remained an independent municipality for centuries. In 1934 it merged with Rotterdam to support the expansion of the port.
The Heerlijkheid Hoogvliet project shows how local communities create spaces for creativity and craftsmanship. Visitors find an arthouse cinema, workshops for model ship-building, and classes where traditional building techniques are passed down.
Three metro stations on lines C and D connect this district to Rotterdam's center with regular service. The stations at Tussenwater, Hoogvliet, and Zalmplaat make it easy to reach different parts of the neighborhood.
A large artificial lake shaped like the Netherlands provides habitat for birds and space for model boating. This unusual water body blends nature with a favorite local recreational activity.
