Gorredijk, Canal settlement in Friesland, Netherlands
Gorredijk is a town in Opsterland in Friesland, with the Opsterlandse Compagnonsvaart canal running through its center and connecting it to the regional waterway network. The settlement has about 7,360 residents and serves as the largest center in the municipality, with schools, sports clubs, and shops.
The settlement developed during the peat extraction era and became a transhipment point for goods transported through the canal system. In 1694 it gained market rights, which solidified its role as a trading center for the region.
The Protestant church in the center shapes the town's appearance and continues to serve as a gathering place for locals. Nearby stand old Jewish cemeteries that reflect the historical diversity of the settlement.
The town is easy to explore on foot, as main facilities are spread around the canal. Parking and local buses connect it to surrounding villages and larger cities.
The settlement was an important hub for peat trade and grew faster than many other villages in the region because of this. Today, the wide main street and the old market layout still reflect this bustling past.
