Gerendal

Gerendal is a dry valley in South Limburg shaped by limestone cliffs and rolling slopes covered with mixed forests and open meadows. A marked trail system with red poles winds through the area, connecting different sections of the landscape.

The valley took shape during the last ice age when flowing water carved through limestone bedrock and created the dramatic topography visible today. Over thousands of years, this erosion process sculpted the distinctive landscape that visitors now explore.

The valley maintains an orchid garden where visitors can observe native Dutch orchid species thriving in their natural setting. The flowers bloom throughout spring and summer, adding color to the landscape during those seasons.

Entry points to the valley are located near Gerendalsweg parking area, which connects to the main trail system through the landscape. The paths are clearly marked with red poles, making navigation straightforward for visitors of different skill levels.

Local Mergelland sheep graze the calcium-rich grasslands, serving as natural land managers in the valley. This traditional herding practice prevents excessive vegetation growth and shapes the appearance of the terrain.
