Diaconiehuis, Alkmaar

The complex began as a welfare facility for elderly people and reflects the Dutch tradition of community care. It received official protection as a national monument in 1969, becoming recognized as an important part of Alkmaar's cultural heritage.

The building was known as Hof van Sonoy and served the community as a residential courtyard for elderly residents in Alkmaar. Visitors can see how the spatial arrangement supported shared life and provided care for those who lived there.

The building is located in Alkmaar's old town and can be reached from Veerstraat 1 or via Lombardsteeg 23. Visitors will find it centrally placed with clear street signs to guide them through this historic neighborhood.

Part of the complex was recently transformed into a restaurant while preserving the original architectural features. This adaptation shows how historical buildings find new purposes while their past remains visible to visitors.
