Westerpark, Public park in Amsterdam West, Netherlands
Westerpark is a public green space in Amsterdam West with paths, ponds, and open areas for relaxation and leisure. The site also includes buildings from the former Westergasfabriek gas plant, which have been transformed for cultural uses.
Amsterdam created its first municipal park here in 1845, which landscape architect Leonard Springer redesigned in 1890. The industrial buildings come from the era when gas production was central to this area for many decades.
The converted industrial buildings now serve as a cultural hub where you can watch films, catch performances, browse markets, and see exhibitions. Regular events and gatherings here bring the neighborhood together throughout the year.
The park is easy to reach from central Amsterdam by tram, bicycle, or on foot, making it accessible for various visitors. Well-maintained paths and plenty of seating areas make it comfortable to spend time walking around and resting.
Each year from April to October, a floating artwork named Bruidsjurk appears in the park pond, created by a group of artists. This installation takes the form of a wedding dress and draws quiet attention from visitors who notice it.
