Saint Catharinachurch, Medieval church in Doetinchem, Netherlands.
Saint Catharina Church is a medieval church in Doetinchem with a three-aisle interior and a striking tower that rises about 58 meters (190 feet) above the town. The structure combines brick construction with Gothic style, giving it a solid, distinctive appearance.
A major fire in 1527, accidentally started when a baker dried flax indoors, destroyed much of the original building. The church was then rebuilt in the Gothic hall style that we see today.
The church functions as a cultural venue where the community gathers for concerts, exhibitions, and markets rather than only for worship. This role shapes how locals see and use the building today.
The church sits on Simonsplein in central Doetinchem and is easy to reach on foot from the town center. The tower stands as a separate structure from the main building, so plan accordingly if you want to see both parts.
The church contains a mechanical organ from 1952, an instrument that produces a distinctly different sound from modern electronic systems. Two of the three bells hanging in the tower date back to the 18th century, adding to the layered history within.
