Westbatterij Muiden, Dutch Waterline fortification in Muiden, Netherlands
The oval-shaped brick tower stands on a moated plot at the mouth of the Vecht River, featuring a drawbridge and thick defensive walls.
Built in 1852, the Westbatterij served as a strategic defense point to protect the harbor of Muiden and prevent enemy landings along the Zuiderzee dike.
The fortification represents Dutch military engineering of the 19th century and forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage listed New Dutch Waterline defense system.
The municipality of Muiden maintains ownership of the fort, which now houses the Scouting Pampus Groep and welcomes visitors across its moat bridge.
During the 1960s, the former gun chambers of the fortification were repurposed as cultivation spaces for growing mushrooms before becoming a scout headquarters.
