Wiegbrug, Bridge in Amsterdam-West, Netherlands.
The Wiegbrug is a drawbridge in Amsterdam-West that allows boats to pass underneath while carrying vehicles and pedestrians over the water. The steel structure is supported by a concrete column and features a bridge house designed by architect Mathieu Ponsen.
The bridge house originally functioned as an operator station for managing bridge operations but was converted into one of 28 accommodations for the SWEETS hotel project starting in 2017. This change shows how the neighborhood has adapted to new uses.
The bridge connects two parts of a neighborhood that people cross daily as part of their routine. It sits alongside food markets and restaurants that shape the character of Amsterdam-West.
For the best view of the bridge structure and its operation, approach from the waterside or nearby quays where you can see how it functions. The area is easy to explore on foot and well connected by cycling routes.
A metal sculpture called Metal Swimmer, created by artist Leonie Mijnlieff in 2004, stands on the concrete column. This human-like figure adds an unexpected artistic and playful touch to the bridge's technical structure.
