Het Schouw, Rural hamlet at Noordhollandsch Kanaal junction, Netherlands
Het Schouw is a small rural hamlet located where two waterways meet in the Noord-Holland region. The area features a mix of residential dwellings scattered among farmland typical of this water-rich landscape.
The settlement developed as a transportation hub when a tram line from 1894 to 1949 connected Amsterdam-Noord with Edam and Purmerend. After this line closed, the area gradually transformed into a residential community with agricultural character.
The northern section includes the Varkensland nature reserve, which maintains the traditional Dutch relationship between settlements and natural landscapes.
The area is accessible by car via roads N235 and N247, which lead to the A7 motorway and Purmerend. Visitors should be aware that this is a thinly settled region with limited facilities within the hamlet itself.
The hamlet straddles two municipalities, with its northern section in Waterland and the southern part in Amsterdam. This unusual boundary arrangement resulted from a municipal reorganization in 1991 and makes this location administratively split.
