Annanina's Rust, Wald in den Niederlanden
Annanina's Rust is a nature area of about 150 hectares that spans forests, meadows, and streams and is managed by the organization Brabants Landschap. The estate displays a mix of planted tree stands and more natural forest areas, with marked walking trails, historic forest ranger houses from the 1940s, and blooming rhododendrons in a southwestern section designed like an English landscape garden.
The estate was founded around 1899 by notary Emile Huijsmans from Diessen and named after his Russian lover. Throughout the 20th century, much of the land was used as a timber plantation, while other areas were designed as English landscape gardens.
The name Annanina's Rust comes from a personal story: a notary named Emile Huijsmans named the land after his Russian lover Anna. This connection to the past has shaped local stories and oral traditions that visitors hear from people in the area today.
Access is free year-round from sunrise to sunset, with starting points at Bremstraat or Biestsedijk in Diessen. The trails are manageable for most visitors with comfortable shoes, and the best time to visit is May when the rhododendrons bloom.
The small stream Spruitenstroompje flows through the estate and turns a reddish-brown tone when it joins the Roodloop, a color caused by iron in the water. This visible chemical change is a detail many visitors overlook while following the streams.
