Oude Buisse Heide, Nature reserve in Zundert, Netherlands
Oude Buisse Heide is a nature reserve covering around 200 hectares with forests, heathland, wetlands, and agricultural land integrated throughout the landscape. The terrain mixes open grassland with wooded sections, creating diverse habitats in a single area.
Henriette Roland Holst donated the entire property to Natuurmonumenten in 1945 to ensure permanent conservation. This transfer marked the beginning of organized protection for the reserve's landscapes.
The Buisse Hoeve farmhouse from 1809 demonstrates traditional Dutch building methods and land management practices of that era. Visitors can observe how rural communities adapted their architecture to the flat landscape and marshy conditions.
Two marked trails cross through the reserve, offering different lengths and views of the varied landscapes. Signage along both routes helps visitors stay oriented and find their way through the terrain.
The reserve contains numerous ponds and water features that formed over centuries from historical peat digging operations. These water bodies now support unusual plants like sundew and bog myrtle that thrive in acidic wetland conditions.
