Castle De Bongard, Medieval castle in Bocholtz, Netherlands.
Castle De Bongard is a 16th-century fortress in Simpelveld with a square layout, central gate tower, and round corner towers. The walls are built from brick and Kunrader limestone and once surrounded by historical moats.
The fortress was built in 1523 by Bernard van Bongard on older foundations and remained in family hands until the French Revolution in 1795. After this period, the structure passed to different owners and underwent changes.
The architecture shows Mosan Renaissance features with late Gothic details and galleries in the inner courtyard. This style was especially popular in the region and shaped many buildings of that era.
The castle is a private residence and not open to the public for visits. It stands on school grounds in Simpelveld, so it can only be viewed from outside.
In the 19th century the castle was significantly reduced and only two wings remained, connecting the gate tower with a corner tower. This transformation shows how the needs for such buildings changed over time.
