Van Heutszkazerne

Van Heutszkazerne is a military barracks in Kampen featuring three stories with brick walls extending as connected buildings along Oudestraat. The complex integrates several formerly separate structures, and even after comprehensive renovation, it retains its historic brick facades and exposed timber beams.

The barracks were built between 1851 and 1853, converting residential houses into a training center for about 600 soldiers. This construction marked an important moment when Kampen modernized its infrastructure for military purposes.

The building now houses the city library, municipal archives, and cultural organizations that gather here regularly. This transformation has made it a living center where residents and visitors connect with local history and knowledge.

The site is easily accessible on foot from central Kampen along Oudestraat and includes an elevator for barrier-free access after recent upgrades. Keep in mind that different areas may have varying opening hours since the building hosts multiple institutions.

The site started in 1810 as separate houses before gradually expanding through property purchases into a unified military training facility. This organic growth remains visible in how the different buildings still show signs of their separate origins while forming a cohesive complex today.
