Valkenstijn

Valkenstijn is a manor estate in Assen featuring meadows, mature trees, and water features, with visible foundations marking where the original mansion once stood. The landscape retains the spatial organization of a former grand residence, laid out across the open grounds.

The property originated in the mid-17th century as Vredeveld and saw several changes in ownership until Augustinus van Valkenstijn purchased it in 1842. The estate subsequently became known by the family name and served as their residence.

The burial site within the grounds holds personal significance for the Van Valkenstijn family and represents a rare private cemetery within the city boundaries. Visitors can observe how family memory is marked in this landscaped setting.

The grounds feature walking paths that let you explore the landscape and discover different areas of the former estate. The site is open year-round in various weather conditions, though it offers limited shelter, so dress accordingly.

An iron gravestone cast by the local Asser Iron Foundry in 1882 displays death symbolism and marks the burial place of the Van Valkenstijn couple. This handcrafted monument is a rare example of the foundry's work preserved in the landscape.
