Oceanium

The Oceanium is a large aquarium at Diergaarde Blijdorp zoo in Rotterdam that displays many marine animals across separate exhibit areas. Each section recreates the look and conditions of a specific ocean or marine environment to give visitors a sense of different underwater worlds.

The facility opened in 2001 as an addition to the existing Diergaarde Blijdorp zoo, which had operated in Rotterdam since the 1940s. This expansion brought a dedicated marine focus to the zoo's offerings, creating a specialized space for ocean environments and their inhabitants.

The Oceanium lets you observe how marine animals behave and interact in settings that mirror their natural homes. Walking through the exhibits, you get a sense of what life looks like in different ocean regions around the world.

You can reach the Oceanium by entering through the main gate of Diergaarde Blijdorp zoo, and it stays open during the zoo's regular operating hours. It is best to allow yourself plenty of time to walk through all the exhibits without rushing.

Behind the scenes, the Oceanium runs research programs aimed at protecting and breeding endangered marine species. This scientific work helps ensure that rare ocean creatures have a better chance of surviving in their natural environments.
