Bonnefantenklooster, Monastery in Jekerkwartier, Maastricht, Netherlands.
The Bonnefantenklooster is a monastery featuring a classical facade with large Ionic pilasters and a pediment showing the Resurrection, located on Bonnefantenstraat. The building underwent significant restoration work and now functions as a university library.
The monastery was established under the care of Regular Canonesses of the Holy Grave starting in 1626 and became an important religious center. French authorities ordered its closure in 1796 and the building was converted into military barracks.
The sisters taught girls from wealthy families, accepting both Catholic and Protestant pupils into their care. Their name, Soeurs des Bons Enfants, reflected their role as educators in the community.
The monastery is located in the Jekerkwartier neighborhood and functions as part of Maastricht University. Visitors should be aware that the building operates as a library with regular opening hours for academic purposes.
The monastery experienced three fires, two of which were reportedly set by a sister who held Protestant sympathies during a time of religious conflict. These incidents reveal the religious tensions that existed within the community.
