Zomerdijkstraat studio housing, Studio housing complex in Rivierenbuurt, Netherlands.
Zomerdijkstraat studio housing is a residential and workspace complex featuring open layouts with large windows that connect living quarters to work areas across multiple stories. The building follows the principles of the Neues Bauen movement, emphasizing functional and bright spaces designed for creative work.
The complex was designed in 1934 by architects Zanstra, Giesen and Sijmons, embodying the modernist ideals of the Neues Bauen movement. In 1990, the Woonstichting Lieven de Key foundation took over the building and established it as a dedicated space for young artists.
The complex served as a workspace and home for numerous emerging Dutch artists over many decades. The studios allowed creative people to work and live in the same place, supporting their early careers.
The building is a protected monument that can be viewed from the outside and is located in a residential neighborhood. Visitors should respect the privacy of residents and understand that interior access may be restricted or unavailable.
In 1990, the building was transferred to the Lieven de Key foundation for just one guilder, an unusual and symbolic transaction. This unexpected gesture preserved the monument and secured its future as a space for creative communities.
