Lichtopstand Zoutelande, Light beacon in Veere, Netherlands
The Lichtopstand Zoutelande is a square brick tower with a tent-shaped roof standing along the Zeeland coast. This structure measures about 13 meters tall and was built to guide ships safely through the Oostgat channel.
The beacon was built in 1951 as part of the Dutch maritime navigation system. Its design worked in coordination with other light structures to create safe channels for ships traveling through the region.
Locals call this beacon by the name Sergeant, reflecting how the maritime heritage has become woven into the community's identity. It represents the region's long relationship with the sea and seafaring ways.
The beacon is accessible from nearby coastal paths and can be easily viewed from the shore. Visitors should be prepared for open, exposed terrain and potentially strong winds common to this coastal area.
This beacon aligns precisely with the Westkapelle Hoog Lighthouse and works with the Dishoek beacons to form invisible guidance lines at sea. Mariners use these alignments as natural signposts to find their way through narrow shipping channels.
