Oranje Nassau's Oord, Care estate in Wageningen and Renkum, Netherlands
Oranje Nassau's Oord is an estate spanning parts of Renkum and Wageningen with meadows in the Beekdal valley and forested slopes of Wageningse Berg. The grounds include a care facility alongside extensive parkland dotted with avenues and supporting structures.
In 1881 King Willem III purchased the estate for his wife Emma van Waldeck-Pyrmont to evoke the landscape of her German homeland. By 1901 it became the Netherlands first tuberculosis sanatorium and later transformed into a specialized care facility.
The estate transformed from a royal residence to the first tuberculosis sanatorium in the Netherlands in 1901, later becoming a specialized nursing facility.
The extensive grounds are best explored on foot or by bike as the large property spans various landscapes with different walking durations for each section. Spring through autumn offers the most pleasant walking conditions when the tree-lined paths and meadows are fully developed.
Landscape architect Louis Paul Zocher transformed the grounds by replacing traditional oak forests with Scots pine and creating sweeping beech avenues. This deliberate reshaping continues to define the visual character and woodland experience of the property today.
