Description
The Sint-Dominicuskerk was a three-aisled cross basilica featuring galleries and a 65-meter high crossing tower that dominated Alkmaar's skyline with its neo-Gothic architectural elements.
History
Built between 1863 and 1866 by renowned architect Pierre Cuypers, the church replaced an earlier hidden church and marked the revival of Catholic religious architecture following the restoration of the episcopal hierarchy in 1853.
Culture
The church served as both a place of worship and community center for Alkmaar's Catholic population, representing a significant example of Cuypers' early work and French Gothic-inspired craftsmanship.
Practical
Originally located at Laat 128 on the corner with Diggelaarssteeg in central Alkmaar, the church was demolished in 1985, with documentation and church records now preserving its architectural heritage.
