Oude Sint-Jacobskerk, Church building and military barracks in 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands
The Oude Sint-Jacobskerk is a church building and former military barracks in 's-Hertogenbosch with brick walls and large window openings. During its period as a barracks, three extra floors were added inside to create more space.
Construction began in 1584 as a Catholic church in this city. After 1629, when state forces captured the city, public Catholic worship was forbidden, and the building was repurposed for different functions.
The building reflects the city's religious transformations through its shifting uses over centuries. What began as a Catholic place of worship became a Protestant chapel, residence, and military facility, showing how faith and function changed together in this region.
The building stands at Bethaniestraat 4 and now houses collections of architectural and archaeological findings from the city. Visitors should note that the interior layout reflects changes from different periods due to its various renovations.
From 1920 to 1987, the building served as the Noordbrabants Museum, displaying the region's art collection. Architect Oscar de Leeuw renovated it and added modern style elements that remain visible today.
