Slot Teylingen

Slot Teylingen is a medieval castle ruin in Voorhout consisting of a circular defensive wall and a substantial residential tower surrounded by water on multiple sides. The structure shows evidence of various repairs and restoration work carried out over the years to preserve what remains.

The castle was founded in the 13th century by Willem van Teylingen to control the important North-South trade route through the region. A major fire in 1675 destroyed much of the structure and led to its eventual abandonment.

The castle once served as a center of power and protection for the surrounding community, and its remnants still reflect the medieval way of life in this region. Walking around the site, visitors can sense how this fortification shaped daily activities and movement through the landscape.

The ruins are located at Teylingerlaan 15c in Voorhout and are straightforward to reach by local transportation. Recent renovation work has made portions of the structure safe for visitors to explore at their own pace.

The kitchen gardens that once served the castle eventually evolved into the world-famous Keukenhof gardens, now celebrated for their extensive spring tulip displays. This transformation reveals how the site's original purpose expanded into something far larger over the centuries.
