Drakenfontein 's-Hertogenbosch, Stone fountain with dragon sculptures at Stationsweg, Netherlands.
Drakenfontein is a stone fountain on Stationsweg in 's-Hertogenbosch featuring carefully crafted dragon sculptures throughout its design. The monument includes a central column with a water-spouting dragon head, flat relief dragons, and a copper dragon figure holding a shield at the top.
The fountain was built in 1903 after Jonkheer Bosch van Drakesteijn sponsored a design competition to honor his twin daughters who died in 1881. The winning design created this monument as a lasting tribute to their memory.
The dragon motif connects this fountain to the city's past as wetland territory and its history as a fortified settlement. You can see this meaning reflected in the multiple dragon figures placed throughout the structure.
The fountain sits at the corner of Stationsweg and Koninginnenlaan, close to the central train station and easy to reach on foot. A major restoration was completed in 2001 to repair damage to the upper dragon sculpture.
During the 2001 restoration, workers placed a time capsule inside the dragon's tail containing a drawing, photograph, and gold leaf for future generations. This hidden message connects the monument to people yet to come.
