Noorderkerk, Hoorn, Gothic church building in Hoorn, Netherlands.
Noorderkerk in Hoorn is a three-aisled church with wooden vaulting and a distinctive gabled roofline facing Kleine Noord street. The building contains two decorated doorways and operates as a hall church with separate spaces for different purposes.
Construction started in 1441 with a wooden chapel that gradually transformed into a stone building, completed in 1519 with additional aisles. This expansion allowed the growing port town to accommodate more worshippers.
The church takes its name from its position in the northern part of town. Visitors can see interior furnishings that reflect how the community worshipped and gathered over the centuries.
The building sits about five minutes from Hoorn train station, making it easy to reach from the town center. The division into different areas allows for hosting a variety of events and activities.
The floor contains gravestones of notable seafarers, including explorer Willem IJsbrantsz Bontekoe and Willem Cornelisz Schouten, who died in 1625. These burials of mariners and explorers reflect the connection between the town and its maritime past.
