Grote - of Laurenskerk

The Grote- or Laurenskerk is a church with a cruciform layout and central tower that displays characteristics of 15th-century Dutch Gothic style. The building shows typical features of this architectural period in its stonework and structural design.

Construction of this religious building began around 1450, making it the oldest remaining structure in the municipality of Weesp. The project reflects the importance the town held at that time.

The church houses a bell system made by the Hemony brothers from Amsterdam that rings every quarter hour and can be heard throughout the town. These crafted bells have shaped the soundscape of the place since the 1600s.

Access to the church is usually possible when services are not taking place, though opening times can vary. It is worth checking beforehand whether a visit is welcome at a particular time.

The church underwent multiple restorations and adaptations over the centuries yet retained its core Gothic structure. This ongoing care allowed the building to survive and remain functional for over five centuries.
