Verzetsmonument, Utrecht, War memorial at Domplein, Utrecht, Netherlands
The Verzetsmonument is a war memorial at Domplein in Utrecht featuring a ten-meter limestone statue of a female figure holding a torch, set on a four-meter natural stone pedestal. The sculpture stands near the Dom Tower and dominates the appearance of the square.
Prince Bernhard unveiled this monument on May 4, 1949, marking the fourth anniversary of Utrecht's liberation from German occupation during World War II. It was created to commemorate the resistance and liberation of that period.
The inscription on the base comes from poet Jan Engelman and speaks of remembrance for those who fought for justice during wartime. These words form a central part of the annual commemorations held at this location.
The memorial is easily found at Domplein 21, located directly near the distinctive Dom Tower, which helps with orientation. Annual commemorations take place here on May 4th, when the square takes on special significance.
The choice of a female figure for the monument highlights the substantial role of women from Utrecht in resistance activities during the war. This representation brings attention to an often overlooked part of the liberation story.
