Watum Lighthouse, lighthouse in the Netherlands
Watum Lighthouse is a small tower near the coast in Delfzijl, built to guide ships safely through shallow waters near the shore. The structure stood on the site of a vanished village and featured simple black and white colors that contrasted with the flat landscape.
Built in the late 1800s, the lighthouse guided ships traveling to and from the nearby Eemshaven through dangerous waters. During the Second World War, it served as a military lookout point and was bombed by Allied forces in April 1945, after which it never functioned again.
The terrain is flat and open, making it easy to walk, with wide views across fields and sandbars. Visit during clear weather to enjoy the landscape and see both the old ruins and the current model of the lighthouse clearly.
The original tower no longer exists, but a small model was placed where it once stood to help visitors imagine its original form. This makes the site a quiet memorial reflecting both the importance of maritime safety and the lasting impact of war on local history.
