Kolonel Palmkazerne, Military barracks in Bussum, Netherlands
Kolonel Palmkazerne is a former military installation in Bussum featuring multiple buildings arranged in a pavilion system designed by Engineer Captain A.G. Boost. The structures organize around central training grounds and reflect the typical layout of a 20th-century military training facility.
The facility was built in 1939 as part of Dutch military expansion before World War II. An Allied bombing raid in 1944 caused severe damage to the structures.
The barracks carries the name of Lieutenant François Abrahamszoon Palm, who served during the Eighty Years War. This historical name connects the place to an important period of Dutch military history.
The site closed in 2006 and underwent redevelopment, with several original buildings receiving protected monument status. Visitors can explore the converted structures today that serve as reminders of its military past.
In 1957 a U.S. Air Force jet crashed onto the grounds, resulting in tragic casualties among the conscripts stationed there. This incident remains a significant moment in the site's post-war history.
