Kasteel Onstein

Kasteel Onstein is a large manor house in Bronckhorst surrounded by a moat with symmetrical gardens laid out in geometric patterns. The main building is constructed from traditional brick, and secondary structures like a coach house and residential buildings are connected to the estate via pathways.

The estate was built in 1711 on a site where a farm had existed since 1494. In the 1920s extensive renovations were carried out, adding a new roof and a bell tower.

The name Onstein comes from the family that shaped it during the 18th century. The formal garden layout reflects historical ideas about order and harmony that visitors can still recognize in the structure of the pathways and green spaces today.

The estate is well suited for exploration on foot via pathways that wind between the various buildings and gardens. Visitors should be aware that paths can become muddy in wet conditions, so sturdy footwear and careful footing are advisable.

The northern avenue of the estate is distinctive in that it is designed directly as a canal connected to the surrounding moat. This thoughtful water connection creates an integrated system that visitors can clearly see while exploring the northern approach.
