Kasteel Reuversweerd, Empire style château in Cortenoever, Brummen, Netherlands
Kasteel Reuversweerd is a three-story castle in Empire style located in Cortenoever with tall windows and wooden shutters that frame views across a 17-hectare estate overlooking the IJssellandschap and Veluwezoom landscapes. The interior contains marble fireplaces, ornate plaster ceilings, and original wallpaper from the 1830s preserved in its rooms.
The castle was built in 1830 for the Colenbrander family and suffered severe damage during World War II when Germans operated a radio station inside while Canadian artillery shelled it in 1945. The building remained abandoned after the war until extensive restoration began in 2018.
The estate now hosts a restoration center that offers workshops and training programs where people learn traditional techniques for preserving historic buildings. The center demonstrates these craft methods through the ongoing work on the castle itself.
The castle is not regularly open to visitors while major restoration work is still underway on the building. Visitors can walk through the grounds and grounds to view the exterior, though caution is needed due to ongoing construction activity.
Although the castle was shelled during the war, the restoration process employs original craftsmanship techniques to recreate lost details like plasterwork and historic paint finishes. This hands-on approach turns the ongoing work into a living classroom for traditional restoration methods.
