Koepoort

The Koepoort is a city gate in Enkhuizen built from sandstone with a distinctive cupola on top. It sits at the boundary between Westerstraat and Westeinde and functions as a landmark that separates the city's streets.

The gate was built in 1649 to replace an earlier wooden structure at the same location. It served as the main western entrance to the city and was part of Enkhuizen's old fortification system.

The statue of Stedemaagd on the city side shows how Enkhuizen expresses its identity through public sculpture. It stands as a symbol of what the town means to those who live here and visit.

The gate is accessible from multiple directions and can be viewed from different angles to appreciate its details. Plan some time to walk around it and examine the sandstone work and cupola up close.

A clock mechanism was added to the cupola in 1793 and remains functional to this day. This technical addition is an often-overlooked detail that shows how the structure was upgraded over time.
