Passage, Glass-covered shopping arcade in The Hague, Netherlands.
The Passage is a covered shopping arcade in central The Hague that creates a wide corridor with glass roofs overhead. It connects several streets through linked galleries decorated with ornamental stonework and lined with shops on each side.
The arcade was built in 1882 in response to the European trend of covered shopping passages, following examples from Paris and Brussels. This new type of street allowed people to shop comfortably without facing the weather.
The Passage has always been a destination where people mix shopping with lingering. Shoppers today experience the same ritual of browsing and meeting that gave the place its character.
The arcade sits in central The Hague with walkway access from multiple nearby streets, making it easy to reach on foot. Inside, visitors can browse and stroll comfortably regardless of weather, with rest spots between shops.
A discovery in 2020 of around 3000 stored historical hats revealed how this spot once served the fashion trade of an earlier era. These items later appeared in exhibitions that told the story of the arcade's retail past.
