The Arsenal is a military complex in Grave featuring casemates, a chapel, and a main building positioned strategically near the Meuse River fortification line. Multiple structures are arranged across the site to form a cohesive architectural ensemble.
The site was established on the former grounds of Castle of Grave, demolished in 1688 during fortification modernization led by Menno van Coehoorn. The new military facility arose at this location as part of strategic defensive improvements for the region.
The complex served as a psychiatric facility for women from 1898 to 1973, reshaping its purpose from military storage to social care. This transformation reflects how the site adapted to meet changing community needs over time.
The complex offers various spaces suitable for events, with the former munitions house now functioning as a venue for gatherings. Allow time to explore the different buildings and areas throughout the site.
The complex includes an elevated garden area built atop former artillery mounds, locally known as Gekkenberg. This space once provided recreation for patients and remains a distinctive feature within the site.
